Better than expected

16 box trailer, at least 3500 lbs. Another...lets call it 600 lbs of stuff on the inside. 101 degrees yesterday. Never got above:

1. 199 F coolant

2. 8 mpg

AC stayed cold.

It handled the weight like a champ and kept 70 mph on all but the steepest climbs where I dropped to 65.

I realize a 3 500 lb 16 foot box trailer isn’t all that impressive but for an engine that is 23 years and 311,000 miles old pushing a lot of air and tire...not bad.

There are not.  The passenger side gearbox is stripped and it wont go fore and aft (simple replacement gear you can press on when I get around to it) and both seats are split in the seat and the foam is toast...plus they wiggle.  BUT its not bad considering the age and mileage.  The power leather seats in these are notoriously wimpy frames.  The manual cloth ones are way more durable.

I would’ve expected better mpg from a small truck and trailer.

This combo with about 6500lbs of boat and trailer gets 7-8mpg, towing at 75-80mph.

Whats in the trailer and in the car is worth many many times the value of the vehicle and trailer.  One small box alone in there was worth 4x what I paid for the cruiser.

That’s not bad at all. What’s normal, 12-13? I was about the post about the impact of the lift/tire on my rig, but it’s not terribly interesting (from 18.2  to 17.2)

That engine must be working pretty hard to move that truck down the road. Ye olde Escalade got about 11mpg in town and 14-15mpg on the highway unloaded . That 5.7 vortec is no marvel of efficiency, but it doesn’t work particularly hard to move an E scalade down the highway.

Thankfully the world has moved on from the RED stranglehold and I can get similar results for 1/10th the price.  The new Black Magic cameras with proper lenses and in their special RAW format are every bit as good as a RED for 6 grand...for the camera.  Media is about 200-500 a card.

Yeah, there isn’t a lot of spare power, but it was never built around power, it was always built as a forever engine. 212 hp and 275 lbs feet new (though not certified with accessories like was required 5 years later.) It doesn’t rev (redline is 5000, power peak is 4600) but it does make 260 lbs feet at 1200 rpm. Though its not like the current cruiser does much better at 13 city 18 highway.  Thats just the nature of these trucks.  Big, dumb, durable.
